United Way of Greater Houston launches "Hope for the Holidays" To Benefit Families in Need

HOUSTON, TX  (Dec. 4, 2017) - How can you make the holidays a little brighter for families affected by Hurricane Harvey? Recognizing that ongoing needs vary greatly from family to family, United Way of Greater Houston has launched “Hope for the Holidays,” a gift card initiative designed to help families affected by the storm. Donations made to this special “Hope for the Holidays” drive will be used to purchase gift cards to help Harvey-impacted families and individuals.

The gift card shopping page, found on United Way’s website, www.unitedwayhouston.org/holidays, is divided into three categories: “Hearty Holiday Meals,” “Holiday Gifts for Kids” and “Home for the Holidays” so a donor can choose to support a family with food for a holiday meal, toys for their children or household items. Many families are still in transition after the hurricane and a gift card allows them the opportunity to select for themselves the items they need most during the holiday season.

“So many of our neighbors were affected by Hurricane Harvey and are still struggling to get back on their feet,” said Anna M. Babin, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Houston. “It’s important for these families to feel a sense of normalcy during the holidays and these gift cards will allow them to select what is needed most during a time when they have little control over some areas of their lives.”

Many United Way partner agencies have shared the need for gift cards following Hurricane Harvey, specifically toys and gifts for kids to celebrate the holidays, as well as basic items like linens, dishes, towels and blankets for those starting over after the storm.

Gift card donations will be distributed through a network of disaster case managers, supported by United Way and its partner agencies, that is already working with vulnerable families across the Greater Houston area who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey. Because these case managers work directly with families and individuals on their long-term recovery, they are familiar with individual needs and how the additional gift card resources could make the greatest difference.
