CONROE, TX - The Greater Conroe Arts Alliance honored longtime Montgomery County resident, Gertie Wiesinger Spencer, with the 2017 Visionary Award on August 12 at the Montie Awards in Conroe.

Spencer had a vision for Montgomery County/Conroe to have a place where the history of the County and City would be accessible for generations to come.  She stayed with the vision that has culminated in a vital resource for the preservation of the County’s history and people—The Heritage Museum of Montgomery County.

Gertie Wiesinger Spencer was born in Conroe and is a fourth generation resident of Montgomery County.  She is retired from the banking industry.  In fact, she was one of the first females to hold the title of “Vice President” in a county filled with male bank executives.  She was active in the Conroe Chamber where she served as Treasurer and was honored as “Man of the Year?”

She was also Diplomat of the Year several years for the Greater Conroe Chamber of Commerce.  She is retired Director of the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County, a position she held for over 15 years.  Upon her retirement, Mayor Tommy Metcalf and the Conroe city Council honored her by declaring Aug. 12, 2005 “Gertie Spencer Day” in Conroe.  She is past Chairman of the Montgomery County Historical Commission where she served for over 20 years while employed at the Heritage Museum.  She currently serves on the board of the Montgomery County Historical Commission.

Spencer and her husband, James, who passed away in 2015, were married 56 years and have three children and five grandchildren.

Family members who accompanied Spencer on this evening were her son, Randy Spencer, daughter Jaime Davis and grand-daughter Keri Houston.  The award was presented by former County Judge Alan B. Sadler.
