Alert to help victims avoid fraud as they begin the process of recovery from Hurricane Harvey

THE WOODLANDS, TX - The following alert has been posted by The Woodlands Financial Group (TWFG) to caution recovering victims of Hurricane Harvey. Gordy Bunch, president and CEO of TWFG, states that, “As our communities begin to rebuild and restore life after Hurricane Harvey, we will see heroes and criminal elements emerge with a perceived opportunity. Please be vigilant as you begin looking for service providers to assist you, your families, and friends.” As founder of one of the nation’s largest insurance services firms, Bunch advises that the following checklist be utilized before committing precious funds to any restoration project.

Our prayers are with everyone in Texas and in our TWFG family, Bunch conveys on behalf of his national network of insurance agents.

Beware: Disaster Relief Fraud

Don’t be victimized twice – be vigilant, ask questions

If someone comes to your door offering services, or posts advertising online in your community Facebook or neighborhood pages, please be vigilant and use this checklist.

  • ALWAYS get more than one estimate. Don’t feel pressured into signing a contract on the spot.
  • ASK for references and check them out. No references, no deal.
  • ASK to see the salesperson’s driver’s license, write down their license plate number, and get a business card with contact details.
  • NEVER sign a contract with blank spaces or boxes left open. Unscrupulous contractors may enter new numbers, services, etc. later.
  • NEVER pay a contractor in full or sign a completion certificate until the work is complete.
  • MAKE SURE you review and understand all documents that are being submitted to your insurance carrier.

A catastrophe greatly magnifies the opportunity for fraud and abuse. Don’t be tempted to conspire in an insurance claim. Insurance fraud is a felony.
