Beating Report Card Stress in 2015

While the school year is nearing a close, there are a few milestones left before the bell rings for the last time: report cards. In CISD, TISD, and KISD the Spring report cards are on their way in the coming weeks.

Regardless of how well the school year has gone, the arrival of these report cards can be a very stressful time for students and parents alike.

The Facts about Summer Learning

The brain doesn’t have an off switch. Kids are always learning—even while sleeping, which is when the brain processes and stores the information that was learned throughout the day. That’s why, cognitively speaking, it doesn’t make sense for kids to take a complete break from learning over the summer.

Grit VS. Intelligence, What Matters More?

I have read numerous articles recently regarding the argument of intelligence versus personality, and which has the greater affect on academic success. Having taught in public school and now on the private side of education, I have a few thoughts I would like to share.

Hot Education Topics for 2015

I want to take some time to highlight the top three areas in Education where I am fielding the most questions and concerns about. Education and change are synonymous and sometimes controversial. My intent is to briefly outline these areas and urge every reader to do their own research (or call me) to dig deeper for better understanding. Here we go:

Home school Support

Many parents are dissatisfied with public education these days. More and more have turned to homeschooling as an alternative. I field calls and questions from current and prospective home school parents every week. The biggest question is, “Can I do this”?

The answer is Yes!, but that is dependent upon your commitment to executing a curriculum that will engage, challenge, and ultimately educate your children.

Why Kids Can’t Write

By Kristal Kaidasz

Recently, a parent brought me a sample of an essay she had written when she was in 8th grade and we compared it to the work of her son, who is now in 8th grade. The difference was amazing. Her essay contained no spelling or grammatical mistakes, was well organized, and its ideas were clearly presented. Her son’s project wandered, and suffered from spelling, grammatical, and organizational mistakes. It was interwoven with passages he had obviously copied from a textbook.
