Five Tips for Success on the ACT and NEW SAT

We are getting close to the rollout of the new SAT in March of 2016. With only one more test date (January 23, 2016) of the current version, many High School Juniors are opting to wait for the new one and then taking the ACT as well in April. We have compiled some great tips for our area students for improving their chances of success in the Spring.

  1. Guess Away! There are no penalties for wrong answers on the new SAT (this finally aligns w/the ACT). So do not leave questions unanswered, and if you’re going guess, bubble in a B or C which are the most common answers.
  2. Reading is now even more important. Grammar & Vocabulary comprehension has been elevated and the best predictor of success in these areas is reading vigor. Don't wait, start reading more (across all genres).
  3. You will need a strategy! All too often we see test takers struggle unnecessarily as they do not use their time effectively. The new SAT has questions in random order NOT by order of difficulty. It’s ok, we have the NEW SAT practice test and EVERY GradePower SAT/ACT student is taught the right test taking strategy.
  4. On the new SAT, the essay will be optional. That does not mean it should be dismissed. The writing prompts on the new SAT will closely resemble those who’ve taken the Advanced Placement English. There are specific strategies revolving around building evidence to support the writers’ case.
  5. Get rest the night before and fuel the day of the test. These tests are long; 3 hours and 50 minutes long for the new SAT if you include the essay. GradePower’s strategy leading up to test day ensures what has been learned can and will be applied on that all important day.
